Free Help for Depression! (Mental Health Month, week 2- events & videos)

May 7, 2018

13% of Americans take an antidepressant (NCHS Aug. 2017). That's not surprising, since medical guidelines in the US recommend medication and therapy as the first lines of treatment for depression. But did you know other countries won't even recommend drugs until you've tried exercise

That's right: the free, proven help for depression is exercise. For many people, exercise is as effective as medication for depression and also for anxiety. In addition, exercise may prevent up to 12% of cases of depression.  As little as 10 minutes at a time--a short walk--may make a difference for your mind as well as your body. Mayo Clinic has more info and tips to get started here

Welcome to Week 2 of our annual Mental Health Awareness Month email campaign

Each week during May we will send an email with videos, links to resources, and upcoming events to provide awareness and support. We hope you'll find the info helpful and that you'll pay it forward by sharing the weekly emails with your family, friends and colleagues!

This week's awareness events include "Insights into the Voice Hearing Experience," the film Unnatural Causes: In Sickness & in Wealth, a program  for families on "Using Effective Coping Skills to Deal with Mental Health," a new family support group, a discussion of the book No One Cares about Crazy People, a talent show, and a concert. (For event flyers and more information, visit our May page and scroll down. Click here to download the calendar of more than 30 events taking place throughout Southwest CT this month!
