Alcohol, Tobacco and other Drug Prevention


Tobacco/Vaping Education 

Nicotine delivery products come in all different types now but the addiction to nicotine is the same. We have also found many of the same chemical combinations in vape smoke as compared to tobacco smoke.

  • Length: 1.5 

  • Target Audience:  Everyone (Adult/Youth) 


Cannabis 101

This training will review cannabis and different forms, the difference between THC and CBD, high potency marijuana, affects on youth and brain development, current statistics and public health implications due to the recent legalization of adult-use cannabis.

  • Length: 1 hour

  • Target Audience: Any youth/adult seeking information and education. Coalition Members and Prevention Professionals.


Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) and Coalition Building Overview

Strategic Prevention Framework is a dynamic, data-driven planning process that prevention practitioners can use to understand and more effectively address the substance abuse and related mental health problems facing their communities. Through this process preventionists will be able to identify sectors, stakeholders and other various partners in creating a strategic plan and identify shared goals. 

  • Length: 1.5 

  • Target Audience: Prevention Professionals, Coalition Members

Opioid Education and Naloxone Administration Training

This training provides information on opioids that include street drugs (like heroin) and prescription drugs (like Oxycontin). Opioid overdoses have become an epidemic; in Connecticut, on average, two people die every day from an opioid overdose. By the end of this training you will learn how to administer naloxone, also known as Narcan, which can reverse an opioid overdose in a few minutes.

  • Length: 1 hour

  • Target Audience: Everyone / Those over 18+ will receive a naloxone kit for FREE 

  • Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Promotion 

Suicide Prevention, Postvention & Mental Health

QPR: Question, Persuade, Refer Suicide Prevention 

The ultimate goal of the QPR training is to help community members prevent suicide attempts and completions. As a result of this training, participants will be able to recognize risk factors and warning signs and understand the myths and facts associated with suicide. Knowledge of referral sources will be addressed as well as increasing intervention skills. 

  • Length: 1 hour 30 minutes 

  • Target Audience: Everyone over 18+ 

Talk Saves Lives 

An Introduction to Suicide Prevention is a community-based presentation that covers the general scope of suicide, the research on prevention, and what people can do to fight suicide.

  • Length: 45 minutes - 1 Hour 

  • Target Audience: Everyone

Postvention Training

How to create, plan and implement a town suicide postvention response team. 

  • Length: 4-7 Hours 

  • Target Audience: Town Leaders, Collaborative stakeholders


Adult or Youth MH Overview - MH and Teens Overview  

Description: Discuss what mental health is, the stigma associated with mental health disorders, examples of common mental health disorders, suicide, prevention, and resources for children, adolescents, and adults. 

  • Length: 1 hour to 1.5 hour

  • Target Audience: Everyone - can be adjusted to youth as young as middle school

Recognizing Anxiety in Teens and Young Adults

Description: Overview of what anxiety is. Discuss what it’s like to live with anxiety, how COVID has affected anxiety, and what adults should know and how they can help.

  • Length:1 hour

  • Target Audience: Adults, Parents, Caregivers, Prevention Professionals and those who work with teens and young adults

Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) 

Description: Youth Mental Health First Aid is designed to teach caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who may be experiencing a mental health or addiction challenge or is in crisis. This training is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. This certified course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people who may or may not be experiencing a crisis.   • Length: Varies depending on format (we offer in-person, hybrid of in-person & online or fully online) 

  • Target Audience: Parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human service workers (attendees must be 18+)

Problem Gambling/Gaming Prevention

Community Conversation About Gambling

Learn about the impact of problem gambling and how to help a loved one. This training will cover local, regional and state-wide resources for problem gambling prevention, treatment and recovery. 

  • Length: 1 hours

  • Target Audience: Any adult/youth seeking information and education

  • Length: 2 hours (Online Learning at your own pace) 

  • Target Audience: Parents & Youths (over the age of 10)  


Additional Trainings

LGBTQIA+ & Allyship

An introduction of LGBTQIA+ education and how to become an ally to the community. This training covers gender identity, sexual orientation, behavioral health statistics, challenges and triumphs within the community, characteristics of an ally, and how to be more inclusive in your work. This training can be adjusted depending on the time and audience. Prevention best practices and interactive group discussions can be included. 

  • Length: 1 hour - 1 hour & 30 minutes

  • Target Population: Everyone - including youth, families and prevention professionals

Basics of Advocacy 

This presentation covers an introduction to advocacy in our state, how to become involved, and the basics of written and spoken testimony. This includes why advocacy matters, how a bill becomes a law, legislative terms to know, how to find and contact legislators, how to locate and track bills, how to access a bulletin as well as a breakdown of steps for spoken testimony and written testimony, including phone calls and emails. 

  • Length: 1 hour - 1.5

  • Target Population: Everyone


Regional Report: Behavioral Health Trends of Southwestern CT

Every two years, The Hub reports a Regional Needs Assessment Priority Report. This training presents the findings of our report in behavioral health topics, trends, strengths, gaps, needs and recommendations. This includes topics around mental health, cannabis, vaping, alcohol, problem gambling, suicide and more, for all ages and across prevention, treatment and recovery. This presentation includes a summary of findings, tailored to your interest as well as a discussion of regional strategic plans in services.

  • Length: 1 hour 

  • Target Audience: Any stakeholder group in Southwestern CT


If you are interested in hosting The Hub for any of the above trainings, please submit a request form at least two weeks in advance. These trainings are for groups and cannot be accomodated to requests for one individual. Trainings are based on staff availability and we will do our best to accomdate to your request. Most trainings can be modified and personalized to your group. When you submit a request, a Hub team member will email you to coordinate.
